KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Some Kansas City teens thought they were going on an adventure Friday afternoon, but instead made a gruesome discovery in a wooded area.

Now police have a mystery on their hands after the snake hunters found bones Friday afternoon near 107th Street and Fuller Avenue.

"It's a pretty quiet neighborhood," said a man who lives nearby, but didn't want to give his name.

People who live in the area say the activity Friday was not the norm.

"I'm very surprised. Nothing like this ever happens over here," the man said.

Kansas City, MO, police say it was about 3:30 p.m. when they got the call that a group of young people - a 16-year-old, 18-year-old and a 20-year-old – had found human remains.

"They went about 20 feet off north of 107th Street into the woods and they spotted what they thought was human remains at which time they immediately went back home and called 911," said an officer on scene.

The remains were found just beyond the tree line in a wooded area not easily seen from the roadway. How long the body had been there is unknown. Police say the body was so badly decomposed it was impossible to tell whether it was a man or a woman, their race or how they died.

The medical examiner will conduct their investigation to answer those questions.

"The first step is to ID the body and then, once we get the ID, we'll notify the next of kin, if there is any," the officer said.

Crime scene investigators, police and detectives spent the better part of about four hours at the scene, meticulously gathering what evidence they could, in hopes of solving the mystery.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene, but that is routine in situations like this. It's too early to say whether the person died from natural causes or something else.
