(KTRK/CNN) – A Texas woman who had 15 snakes has agreed to give them up. The snakes were seized last week, but the owner had fought to keep them. Now the battle is over.
Choking back tears, Brittany Barrineau stood in front of a judge and admitted the hard truth that she simply couldn't properly care for the snakes taken from her home.
"I just want what's best for them," Barrineau said. "That's the bottom line. I just want to see them happy and that's all that really matters is that they are happy."
Last Wednesday, deputies from Harris Co. Precinct 1 Constable Office went to Barrineau's Heights-area home and took control of all the snake they could find. The longest was 15 feet. Deputies who worked on the case say the snakes' lives were at stake
"In the beginning, the concerns were the cleanliness of the cages and the size of the cages and the fact that several of the snakes appeared quite thin," an officer said.
The SPCA is currently caring for all 15 of these snakes rescued. Plus, one cat.
The SPCA's experts say all of the seized snakes are getting treatment and improving. Precinct 1 Constable Office says it now wants to help Barrineau do the same.
"I did offer to get her some psychiatric help because I did think that she's in a very tough spot right now and so our office is going to help facilitate some treatment for her," Constable Alan Rosen said.
As the woman who once owned 15 snakes admits, they are now in better hands.
"I love my snakes enough to let them go," Barrineau said.
