Pageant parent says its a 'rich person's sport'

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Ron Wessel is the father of Miss Arizona Jordan Wessel and he says the pageant is a ‘huge commitment."

Wessel is in town supporting his daughter's goal of becoming Miss USA. The pageant will be held Sunday at the River Center in Baton Rouge.

"I'm just enjoying it for her," he says. "I'm so proud of her and really happy she's gotten this opportunity."

But Wessel says the opportunity doesn't come cheap.

"It's kind of a rich person's sport and we're not rich," he says. "Some of these dresses are outrageous. I mean they're beautiful, but it's hard for me to justify paying $25,000 bucks for wearing something one time."

Fortunately for him, Jordan has worked really hard to get sponsors to help offset the costs. He says it's been fun watching his daughter mature.

"She's had some really great opportunities for modeling and meeting people and growing. She's only 20 years old."
