Jonesboro church cleans up storm's aftermath

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Thursday's storm left behind uprooted trees, broken branches and concerned homeowners.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams took to the streets to help. A group from Walnut Street Baptist Church spent most of the day Friday cleaning up a home on Walnut Street, where strong winds uprooted several trees.

"I've never had this happen before," nine-year-old resident Jake Carter said.

When Carter pulled up to his home, a 100-year-old tree was lying in his driveway.

"Before they all came, the front yard was covered," Carter said. "You couldn't even get out from the back of the driveway. I was worried about my stuff."

Carter said luckily his stuff and the rest of the home were not damaged, but the storm left behind quite the mess. That's when the Walnut Street Baptist Church group arrived.

"We're cleaning the yard up, making sure they have access through their driveway and garage," said Larry Turner, the Walnut Street Baptist Church missions coordinator.

"They did it for free actually," Carter said.

Turner and his five person team are trained to help people like Carter.

"That's why a ministry like this is so effective because we're used to this kind of situation," Turner said. "So we can help the homeowner calm down about the situation and we help them. We've got a great team. They like to work hard."

Turner said Walnut Street Baptist Church is no stranger to disaster relief. Church members have helped people in this area for the past three years.

"It could have been our house, it could have been our damage," Turner said. "We love to do this and that's why we do it because people need help in this kind of situation."

Carter said he is very grateful for their help.

"Thank you," Carter said.

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams are assessing damage in Jonesboro, Bono and Trumann.

The organization offers its services free of charge but accepts donations.
