TUNICA, MS -
(WMC) - After nearly 20 years in Tunica County, Miss., Harrah's Casino is closed. The closure left employees without jobs; a massive, empty building was also left behind.

The signs are coming down and a blockade is keeping anyone but former employees from going onto the property. Now that the casino is closed, more than 1,000 people are looking for jobs.

"Once you bond with a lot of coworkers, it's like family," said Chardrick Maxwell, who worked at Harrah's Casino.

After midnight Sunday, June 1, business at the casino officially stopped. Harrah's has been a staple in the community for nearly two decades.

"To me, it's emotional because I've been with the company for a long time," said Maketa Moore. "So, I can't believe it's closing."

"It'll effect not only Tunica, but people outside Tunica, too," added Maxwell.

People drove from all over the Mid-South to work at the casino. Many former employees do not know what their next step will be.

"Nobody's looking to hire anybody right about now because it's not like it used to be. The economy is not like it used to be," said Moore.

Harrah's announced the closure at the end of March.

"Going to miss a lot of them, from the managers all the way down," said Maxwell. "I've been here, like, eight years and I've met so many people."

The closure also impacts others Harrah's properties like the golf course and the hotel. The buildings will remain vacant until there is a buyer.
