(VIRGIN GALACTIC/CNN) – It's countdown to liftoff for SpaceshipTwo, the name of Virgin Galactic's space vehicle.

The space flight company says it now has clearance from the U.S. government to being planning space flights.

Company owner Richard Branson says his family will be on Virgin's first space flight.

Virgin Galactic already has more than $70 million in deposits from almost 600 people who want to take a ride into space.

The flights are expected to begin by the end of 2014.
