KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Republican National Committee said that Kansas City is one of the four finalists to host the GOP convention in 2016.

Cincinnati and Las Vegas withdrew their applications after determining they could not meet the arena requirements. The RNC was expected Thursday to narrow the list from six cities to three.

With the two withdrawals, the RNC decided to leave the finalist list at four.

Kansas City is competing with Denver, Dallas and Cleveland. Kansas City last hosted the Republican National Convention in 1976.

In a tweet sent out late Thursday morning, Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael J. McDonald indicated Las Vegas withdrew from consideration to host the key convention.

"It's a shame we had to withdraw this round but I will be pushing for 2020! TY to @LV2016 team for all your hard work #NVGOP," he said.

Mayor Sly James and members of the bi-state KC2016 Bid Task Force beamed with pride Thursday afternoon in discussing the announcement. James, who has traveled to Boston and New York to meet with RNC officials to make his hometown's case, is cautiously optimistic that Kansas City will win the big prize.

"They made a good choice," James said. "We believe to this day that we have the best option for them."

The full RNC delegation will travel between June 2 and June 13 to visit cities to eventually make a final selection. A decision is expected shortly after that.

Enid Mickelson, who is chairwoman of the RNC's site selection committee, complimented the four cities.

"All cities excelled in nearly every aspect of their bids and presentation this year, but these four cities stood out from the field from the start of this process and deserve a deeper look by the full committee," she said. "I applaud the effort and commitment shown by all cities involved, and I thank all parties for their dedication to this endeavor. The 2016 convention will provide a unique opportunity to showcase our party as well as the host city itself, and I'm confident we will choose the best possible setting to nominate our next Republican president."

Metro communities are making a big investment in hosting the convention in a Republican-leaning state.

KCMO and Kansas City, KS, along with Jackson and Johnson counties are each investing $65,000 to the convention bid. And that investment could pay off.

The city could see $200-$300 million of economic activity if it lands the 2016 convention.
