Lieutenant Sheila Simon is gathering support for a school funding reform that would benefit rural students.
She says Senate Bill 16 would update and outdated and unfair funding system the bill aims to make funding more equitable for smaller tax bases around Illinois.
It would ultimately change the funding system in to one formula that would account for school districts' funding needs while also encouraging the development of dial credit programs throughout the state.
“this formula will direct our state aid towards need. If your need is that your students are impoverished that is going to be recognized in the formula. If your need is that you have a high number of students learning english as their new language, that takes more resources and that is going to be reflected,” says lt. Simon.
State senator andy Manor is helping to pass the legislation.
