We've had some phone calls to our newsroom about a scam warning and the Piedmont chief of police said a lot of people have called him about it too. Todd Tumminia looked into this scam and will have the details, coming up on Heartland News at 9 and 10.

Tuesday is a big day for many politicians in Illinois. It's also going to be a big day for Gallatin County Schools. Arnold Wyrick talked to them today about why they're banking on "yes" votes on Tuesday. He'll have the story on Heartland News at 9 and 10.

As you drive across the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge within the next few weeks, look up. You might see people rappelling from the cables. It's all part of a routine bridge inspection. Kadee Brosseau talked to the people making sure the bridge is safe. You can click here for the story.

One daycare in southern Illinois is using a unique technique to prepare kids for entry into school. Cedar House Daycare in Herrin uses a Native American technique in which they use animals found in Colorado to teach children the fundamentals of reading, math, English, Spanish and more.

Thirty-three years later, it's official for a same-sex couple in Jackson County. Duane Cole and Joe Powers are the first couple in southern Illinois to apply for and be granted a marriage license. They were also the first to apply for a civil union in the county in June 2011.

One lane of eastbound Interstate 64 is open in Jefferson County near mile post 70. A crash involving a semi truck closed both eastbound lanes of I-64. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that hit a gas line in Pulaski County late Tuesday night. According to Pulaski County Emergency Management Agency, it happened on U.S. 51 just north of Mounds around 11:30. The vehicle ran off the road for unknown reasons, hit the gas line. The driver left the vehicle and fled the scene.

An annual state report puts the Illinois deficit at nearly $45 billion. Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka released the report Wednesday. She says the shortfall grew by less than 1 percent from the previous year. She says the growth in liabilities was mostly because of obligations to state pension systems and other post-employment benefits.

In national news, two people are dead and 24 more are injured after a five-alarm fire and explosion occurred Wednesday, resulting in two collapsed buildings in Manhattan. The two deceased victims are women.

President Barack Obama expressed a glimmer of hope Wednesday that a referendum on the future of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula can be halted, as he met with the new leader of the former Soviet republic.
