INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

An attorney who was drunk when he plowed into a state highway worker was sentenced on Friday to nine years in prison.

David Murdock apologized to the family of Clifton Scott who was killed in September 2012 while working a crash on Interstate 70 in Independence. Murdock drove through barriers and past flares and other warnings before the crash.

Jackson County prosecutors sought the maximum punishment of 15 years in prison while Murdock's attorneys sought probation.

Family, friends, law enforcement officials and first responders filled the courtroom for Friday's sentencing hearing.

Family members said they were glad Murdock was sentenced to prison and didn't get just probation.

Scott worked for MODOT for 15 years and was considered an exemplary employee. He was 51 years old.

There are signs up in his memory on the stretch of I-70 where he died.
