Wednesday begins the Lenten season for millions of Christians and several pastors in our area decided to take Lent to where people meet and even drive.

Not everyone is comfortable going to a church and they may not belong to a church. Pastor Dave Barnhart decided he would share the traditional Lenten ashes and message with people who are on the go.

Pastor Barnhart says he's giving people a 'window of opportunity' to pray and receive ashes in the sign of the cross as they sit in their car. He decided to do this at a former mechanic shop near Crestwood Park.

"I think God meets us where we are in the faith journey. To be in your car, maybe that's a time we need to repent sometimes. On the commute, some aren't the nicest people in the world, but the idea that God calls us to repent, and to return to him anytime during the course of our day, throughout the course of our lives," Barnhart said.

Barnhart is an ordained United Methodist minister who founded Saint Junia Church. Services are held at  the Girls, Inc. building in Crestwood not far from where he administered Lenten ashes.

Even though his congregation doesn't have its own building, Pastor Barnhart thought it was important to bring Christ's message to the people, much as Christ did.

"Most of the times in Jesus' ministry, he was out in the streets, the market places. So we're really out in the streets and marketplaces of Birmingham, and allow people to repent and hear the good news and prepare for Easter," said Barnhart.

In the same spirit, St. Luke's Episcopal Church also offered a Lenten Service in Linn Park at noon and distributed ashes at the north pavilion at UAB Hospital from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
