(WMC-TV) - Part of southbound Interstate 55 was shut down in Arkansas from the Missouri line south to Osceola, according to Arkansas State Police.

Traffic was backed up for miles heading in and out of Memphis and lasted into early Tuesday morning. Traffic is moving slowly on northbound Interstate 55 in Arkansas after crashes shut traffic down in both directions for hours Monday.

According to Arkansas State Police, there were multiple wrecks on I-55 in Mississippi County, both northbound and southbound at mile marker 41.

Arkansas State Police also say there have been several tractor-trailer accidents near the Missouri and Arkansas border. Several tractor trailers have jack-knifed in that area.

Drivers say they have been in traffic for several hours. They are worried about running out of gas and becoming stranded.

Northbound traffic opened around 1 a.m. Tuesday. Traffic is moving very slowly as drivers are going slowly over the I-40 and I-55 bridges.
