After his service ended, this week's Heartland Hero decided to go to work and raise a family. Seventy years later, he got the surprise of a lifetime when the State of Missouri gave him something he was missing. Todd Tumminia will have the story tonight on Heartland News at 10.

The Harrisburg School District is facing a budget shortfall of around $800,000. Now, the school board has proposed making cuts at several schools throughout the district. Arnold Wyrick will have more on Heartland News at 9 and 10.

A year after two young men died just feet apart from each other, their families come together. They do not believe 22-year-old Joe Gillam shot and killed 30-year-old B.J. Edwards on January 20, the shot and killed himself.

A Scott City teenager has died from injuries he received in an ATV crash on Friday. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, 17-year-old Dominic Hooper died on Sunday at a Cape Girardeau hospital.

A car with a trailer full of alligators was involved in a crash on Interstate 55 Saturday evening. According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, two crashes happened near mile marker 96 in the southbound lanes. Both were around 7 p.m.

Police say a couple is in custody after being accused of property damage outside of a senior apartment building in Cape Girardeau last week. They were caught on Themis Street in Cape Girardeau on Monday around 9:15 a.m.
