BULLITT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A one of a kind retreat for veterans will be operating this summer. Vets are already feeling better about themselves after volunteering on the property.

Active Heroes, a 501c3 charity serving veterans, active duty military and their families, purchased 144 acres in Bullitt County to provide a therapeutic approach to saving lives.

"Our idea behind the retreat was to build a place where military families can come to heal from the invisible wounds of war," Active Heroes President Troy Yocum said.

Bullitt County's sprawling canopy and natural streams brings peace to veterans like Justin Fitch. "It's going to be completely unique - unlike any other place in the nation," Fitch said.

Many veterans and military families dealing with post traumatic stress disorder struggle with going out into the public. "This retreat is designed to give these families a safe place where they can enjoy company of others and have healing areas to get alone time," Yocum said.

The retreat provides a essential therapy for Fitch. "Currently, I have stage 4 cancer. I've been going through a lot of surgeries and chemotherapy for the past two years. And I needed something to focus on to keep me sane," Fitch said.

Despite his own challenges, Fitch is taking on a national tragedy with Yocum. "We're now looking at 22 veterans a day taking their own life. That's more veterans committing suicide than veterans being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. This retreat will make a difference in their lives," Yocum said.

The retreat will have several outdoor activities including a lake for swimming, canoeing and paddle boats. There are also 5 streams and ponds for fishing. Other outdoor activities include the honor hiking trail that follows the outer edge of the retreat. There's also plans for areas to enjoy horseback riding, archery, biking, rope and rock climbing walls and a kids playground.

Active Heroes is planning a groundbreaking in May. The group needs financial support to continue its mission. Click here to learn more about Active Heroes.
