SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -

They were high school sweethearts who met at a dance in Utah decades ago. On Monday, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in Arizona.

Rex Daniels, 92 and Phyllis Daniels, 90, got engaged and were married in February 1944, just weeks before Rex was deployed to Germany, Luxembourg and Czechoslovakia at the height of World War II.

Before he left, they learned they had a baby on the way.

Rex fought as a Piper Cub pilot in Gen. George Patton's Third Armored Division, flying over the front battle lines to let the troops know where to aim their weapons.

Rex said he would crawl into the bottom of his sleeping bag in his foxhole and would write to "his girl."

Their only child, Karen Phyllis Daniels, was born Dec. 7, 1944, the third anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Rex met his baby girl for the first time when she was 10 months old.

After the war, Rex continued his education at Brigham Young University and received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Utah.

His career took him all over the country, moving at least 30 times before making Scottsdale home. They lived in Scottsdale for more than 30 years before recently moving into the Chaparral Winds Retirement Community in Surprise.

"We just love each other, so we've stayed together," Phyllis said. "We've never thought of anything any different. That's just the way it is. Seventy years seems like a long time when you say it, like an awful long time, but it doesn't seem like we've been together that long. I would do it again."
