BOWLING GREEN, KY (WAVE) – The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green turned into a Corvette graveyard after a sinkhole dropped eight of the cars 30 feet deep in the ground.

"It's sad," Western Kentucky University Geoscience Professor, Jason Polk said. "They're Corvettes."

Some of these cars were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Surveillance video from the museum caught all the action as the cars went under just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.

By 5 p.m. crews were working carefully to remove the cars from the dome that weren't sucked in the hole.

"It's just something that happened to be in a place that's getting a lot more attention because obviously it's in a Corvette museum," Polk said.

Sinkholes are common in the area, the executive director of the museum said they even had sinkhole insurance, but teams of experts were taking a look to see if this one will grow.

"It appears reasonably stable, but we might see a little bit more falling in over time, um, but right now it's difficult to tell," Western Kentucky University Civil Engineering Professor Matt Dettman explained.

As carpet tiles were peeled back, cracks in the floor were revealed.

"It appears to be migrating away from the building, not towards the main part of the building," Dettman said.

Engineers said the museums main building is not in danger.

"There's no need for panic or any indication that there's any other causes or issues," Polk said.

The dome is a separate structure connected to the main building through a hallway. The dome will be blocked off by a plywood wall before the rest of the museum opens Thursday.
