NEWNAN, GA (CBS46) -

Megan Winters survived a fall into a 50 foot deep well. She spent almost a month in the hospital and has been back home for about two weeks.

Winters is 7 years old and in second grade.

She becomes very grown-up when the date Dec. 30 is brought up. "I was so scared. I was just really, really scared," said Winters.

She and three other kids were sitting on the ledge of a well on her grandparent's property. The well had a metal grate on it. But, Winters' mom said they think someone stole it for scrap metal and put a foam egg crate back over the opening.

"When I went to stand-up and the leaves just gave up," said Winters.

She said she caught herself on the ledge and then started falling. "I fell and put my hands out, and slow my fall and I caught myself and my arm snapped," said Winters.

She said the other kids tried to help, but they weren't strong enough. Her grandmother rushed over and called 911.

Winters fell to the bottom of the 50-foot-dry well. The diameter of the well was 30 inches.

"She (grandmother) just kept saying, 'Megan.' I just kept on saying, 'get me out of here.' I did not like that," said Winters.

Winters said she was too scared to think of anything. She remembered a firefighter coming down to rescue her. But, she had to put on the harness and push on her arm that was broken.

Firefighters were able to lift Winters out in a little more than an hour. She was taken by helicopter to the hospital.

Her mom, Melissa Winters, described her injuries. "Her left arm was pretty much splintered down. She just had the pins removed from her left ankle Saturday and they removed the full cast. She has permanent screws above that knee. She has a full plate going into her right hip. She has a plate by her eye, but that dissolves."

Winters came home about two weeks and is already spending some time at school. Her mom said everyone at school has been very supportive.

"Everyone's pretty much amazed at how quickly she is recovering," said Melissa Winters.

Melissa Winters said it appears her daughter will make a full recovery.

Even with insurance the medical bills add up to staggering number. A fundraiser is being held Feb. 9 from noon until 3 p.m. at Frank's Family Restaurant at 1188 Collinsworth Road in Palmetto. It's called "Pasta for Megan" and will have 10 booths of children's activities like face painting and moonwalking.
