MANTECA, CA (KCRA/CNN) - Vandals spraypainted graffiti on a mosque and left strips of raw bacon strewn across the parking lot Tuesday.
Now, some are calling for the vandalism to be investigated as a hate crime.
"Unfortunately, some people have hate," Mohammad Elfarra said. He came out of a daily prayer service at the Islamic Center of Manteca and saw that the front sign had been vandalized.
He described the damage: "The F-word Islam and also on the arrow as you exit the property, the white arrow."
Elfarra said vandals also left strips of raw bacon as a hate message.
"Bacon, lard or anything from the pig is prohibited by the Bible and Koran," he said. "The racism, the hate that can be spread in all of it is based on lack of knowledge and ignorance."
Members of this mosque say they're not concerned about punishment; they say they're more concerned about safety.
"Things like this make you sad," mosque member Masood Cajee said.
This is the second time the mosque has been struck by vandals. Members of the mosque remember last year's graffiti clearly. It read, "No Allah, only god."
"It was time to speak out about it," Cajee said. "Hate crimes are taken seriously, and I think the message has to go out."
The council on American-Islamic relations is asking the FBI to investigate the vandalism as a hate crime.
Members of the center say hate has to stop.
"It is scary just again ... sadly ever since the tragic events of 9-11 where, as Muslims, we felt hit twice," Elfarra said.
