JACKSON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 17-year-old student was injured in a shooting at Liberty Tech High School in Jackson, Tenn. Thursday afternoon.

Jackson Police Department reports that the teen was shot in the thigh outside the building as classes were being dismissed. He is in stable condition.

Law enforcement surrounded the high school immediately after calls were received regarding the shooting. Liberty high officials stopped the buses from leaving until the school was secure.

"I think its terrible. I mean, I really don't think we need that in the schools," said student Taylor Allen. "I do worry."

Police say the 16-year-old suspect left in a car. He was reportedly taken into custody at his grandmother's house.

Many residents say they did not expect to hear about a school shooting in Jackson.

"It's a shame ... especially two young students like that," said resident Brenda Hall.

Jackson police say they do not know a motive for the shooting. There are plans for increased police presence at Liberty High School Friday.
