I-24 Ohio River Bridge work zone width restriction reduced

METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced the contractor working on the Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge between Paducah, Ky. and Metropolis, Ill. has extended the time the work zone will be in place.

According to IDOT, they have also reduced the maximum load width in the work zone.

Starting Monday, December 23, the present 11 ft. 3 in. maximum load width will be reduced to 10 ft. 11 inches.

The contractor plans to continue work on the bridge into mid-January. This means the work zone lane and load width restriction for both eastbound and westbound traffic at Illinois mile point 38.5 and Kentucky mile point 0.0 will remain up during the Christmas and New Year holiday driving period.

IDOT said drivers should be alert for slowing and merging traffic as they approach this work zone. There is a strictly enforced 55 mile per hour speed limit in this work zone. Traffic is restricted to one lane with a barrier wall installed to protect workers. Appropriate caution is required.

The $2.1 million project includes installation of new joints and a deck overlay.
