POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - More than 2,300 American flags lined the streets of Poplar Bluff by Wednesday night.
It's the community's way of honoring their fallen Marine, Staff Sergeant Eric Summers.
Many people came out tonight to pay tribute and all ages came out to help.
Hundreds of volunteers put American flags into the ground from where the services will take place to where summers will be laid to rest.
People in the community say Wednesday was all about Eric, and they couldn't be more proud to say he's from Poplar Bluff.
"My daughter is a home schooler actually, and I brought her out here so we could be apart of doing this for the summers family," said Lorrie Coleman of Poplar Bluff.
"I've never seen anything like it and it is so honoring for Eric because he was a hero and he's going to get a hero's welcome," said Jeff Shawan, Butler County EMA.
Staff Sergeant Summers is expected to be returned to Poplar Bluff late Thursday night with the visitation and services to the next two days.
