PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Snow and ice caused the roof of the old Michael Hardware building in Paducah to collapse into the 5th floor of the building.

Ken Hunt with A & K Construction says they were working on shoring up the roof to repair it from previous deterioration.

"It fell right on top of the 5th floor. We had spent last week shoring up the fifth floor," Hunt said. " We had steel shoring in there, it probably kept the building from totally collapsing."

The collapse of the roof pushed out a huge section of the south wall. Those bricks collapsed onto the roof of the Broadway General Store building, knocking a 30 foot diameter hole in the roof.

"When the roof collapsed on the Michael Hardware building due to the ice and snow accumulation, the parapet fell on the roof of the Broadway General Store," Hunt said.

They are going to be working throughout the night to remove the debris from the general store building and make a temporary repair to its roof.

The other building is a much more dangerous and lengthy repair job.

Building inspectors are inside of it trying to assess the damage and what it's going to take to replace the roof.

Nobody was inside either building at the time of the collapse.
