US 68/KY 80 Cumberland River Bridge reopened after hit by barge

TRIGG COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The US Coast Guard is reporting the US 68/KY 80 Cumberland River Bridge at Canton in Trigg County has reopened after a barge hit it Saturday evening.

It was closed to vehicular traffic for a safety check, but according to KYTC, the inspector found no indication of damage to the structure.

The USCG received notice the Motor Vessel James H. Hunter scraped against one of the piers on the bridge. The captain indicated a gust of wind pushed the tow of 15 empty coal barges into the pier.

At this time the Coast Guard has not closed the bridge. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge inspector has been dispatched to run a safety check the bridge structure.

The bridge may have to be restricted to one lane to allow the inspector access to the bridge. Some delays are possible during the inspection.
