Dec. 3 is #GivingTuesday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

It has been said the Holidays are time for giving instead of receiving.

Did you know Tuesday, Dec 3 is #GivingTuesday?

How do you plan to give this year and what organization or non-profit is your favorite cause?

Chat with Heartland News online Monday and Tuesday on Facebook about the mission to give back on #GivingTuesday.

The United Way of Southeast Missouri says they will be posting from now through Tuesday, December 3 on their Facebook and Twitter pages about #GivingTuesday.

"We just want people to remember there are a lot of folks in our local communities that need help and without you they won't have a nice Christmas," said Nancy Jernigan, Executive Director of the United Way of Southeast Missouri. "We support more than 30 organizations and 50 programs and we can't do it without you."

Read to Succeed, The Salvation Army, and programs for health and senior services are among the many programs supported by the United Way.

Cape Jaycees are also among the organizations asking for your help on #GivingTuesday.

"We are working on our annual toy drive where it's basically our chance to be Santa," said Matt Hollis of the Cape Jaycees.

Jaycee Toybox will be asking for your help well into the month of December.

"Any donations will help us," said Hollis. "We are able to give to several hundred kids in our local community. The need just keeps growing."

Send monetary donations for Jaycee Toybox to:

"We take lots of different kinds of toys for boys and girls of different ages," said Hollis. "We have more applications than last year so we really need your help."

Donations ideas include puzzles, legos, dolls, basketballs or soccer balls, movies or CD's and even coats.

"It's just important for everyone to give," said Jernigan. "If we all do a little bit it will make a big difference."

Toybox Delivery is December 19th.

Meanwhile on #GivingTuesday, other local groups like Out of Poverty Thru Education ask for your help to develop projects to reach out to struggling and developing nations. OPTE recently dedicated a school in Thomassique, Haiti thanks largely to donations from people in Cape Girardeau.

Other groups say they need assistance with groups to help the elderly, and many food pantries say it continues to be challenging to keep the shelves stocked.

"We just hope Giving Tuesday is a chance where everyone will take a second to consider giving back," said Jernigan.
