8-year-old saves father's life; dad: 'I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her'

An East Texas father is calling his 8-year-old daughter his hero, after she saved his life.

Cody Lewis was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011. He was home alone with his daughter Caylee, when he went into hypoglycemic shock.

"She's definitely my little angel. Had she not been there with me, I wouldn't be here today," said Cody.

She wasn't even supposed to be with him. Caylee was suppose to go to her grandparents, but said she wanted to stay with her dad instead. Cody was taking a nap in his room while Caylee watched TV with him. That's when she saw something was wrong.

"She noticed that her arm was wet and she was like, 'Why is my arm wet?' and she lifted up the covers. That's when she saw that there was sweat just all over the bed," said Cody.

"I was like daddy are you okay? Daddy are you okay? He wouldn't wake up," said Caylee.

Cody was in hypoglycemic shock. Caylee immediately grabbed her father's cell phone to call her mom.

"This had happened to him previously about a year ago and Caylee said, 'Mom this is not like last time,' so that's when I knew if an 8 year old noticed, we needed to call 911," said Casie Lewis, Caylee's mom.

As Casie called 911, it was Caylee who monitored her father's breathing.

"My heart was pounding," said Caylee.

Caylee then got one of her birthday cupcakes, and put icing in her dad's mouth to help raise her father's blood sugar again.

"At one point she said, 'Momma I'm going to have to set you down so I can do this,'" said Casie.

Paramedics arrived to take Cody to the hospital and commended Caylee for her actions.

"They told me I definitely have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and your daughter's definitely one of them," said Cody.

Cody says Caylee is now his hero; quite the role reversal for a man who served in the U.S. Army for eight years.

"I was really proud of myself because he would have died if I wasn't there," said Caylee.

From this, they family says they realized how important it is to teach your children how to be prepared for emergencies.
