Church, Moore tornado survivors step up for Brookport storm victims

BROOKPORT, IL (KFVS) -

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what you have. But the Brookport tornado has made this year more difficult than ever for storm victims.

That's why the Mt.Sterling Church in Unionville members are dedicating their time to make sure everyone gets a Thanksgiving meal.

More than 20 turkeys and all the extras that go into a turkey day feast have been donated by outside businesses.

"Their whole lives have been disheveled and we just want to do everything we can to make it as normal as possible," said Pastor David LeNeave.

Dessert will also be served and provided by Dairy Queen in Metropolis.

Anyone is welcome to come.

The church is also providing counseling help for victims.

Survivors from that huge tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, earlier this year, are heading to Brookport to share what they went through in hopes that it will the help storm victims there.

The group is called "Hope Raisers."

They travel to towns after tragedies, like Sandy Hook and the tornado in Joplin in hopes that sharing the same experiences will help with the what they're going through.

"They want to meet people from this community and be able to help encourage them. Just be an uplifting encounter. They want to match families from Moore with families here and walk them through this journey that they are facing," said John Van Tiem

Anyone needing to talk or listen can go to the Mount Sterling Church from noon until 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Church leaders this will be just the first of many visits in the future.
