Volunteers brave the cold to help people in Brookport

BROOKPORT, IL (KFVS) - Volunteers from across the Heartland braved near freezing temperatures on Saturday to help people in Brookport pick up the pieces of their lives.

Operation H.E.L.P. from Graves County, Kentucky spent the day sorting through piles of debris that were once someone's home.

"When there are disasters in locations around the nation we go to support the people in that," Jennifer Hughes said. "It was fitting when it came to our neighborhood, which we consider this our neighbors. We knew we had do something for them as well. We make an impact in the area where we work. We're very organized. And we love people. So it's very motivating to come out and see something changed when we're done.".

A group of sorority sisters from Murray State University, formed a hand line along one side of the debris pile to help sort things out.

"A tornado hit my house a few years ago in Saint Louis, and I just know how devastating it is for these people to lose their homes,"  said Kelly Grant with Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. "I just really wanted to help out. I know it's difficult with the shoulder thing, but as long as I can go and do what I can, I just wanted to be as much help as I can.

Kelly dislocated her right shoulder on Friday morning, but it didn't stop her from helping people in Brookport on Saturday afternoon.

And, neither could the near freezing temperatures keep many other volunteers from lending a helping hand to the residents cleaning up after last Sunday afternoon's deadly tornado.

"There's such an outpouring of help in there," Mike McClure said, of Immanuel Baptist Church. "It's amazing how much we can done in just a few hours, we've made a lot of progress. It's nice to see the community come together the way it has."

The members of Operation H.E.L.P. will be in town throughout the week ahead. And they're going to be feeding everyone in town a Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, at the Brookport Elementary School, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., on that day.
