BROOKPORT, IL (KFVS) - Crews assisting the Massac County Emergency Management Agency spent their day assessing damage in Brookport to turn in to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
The initial damage assessment meant crews walked to each and every home in the area.
An entire group of emergency management personnel were dedicated to the assessment efforts in Brookport. The process is in-depth: Each address was taken down, the home owner questioned about their insurance coverage, visually assessed and finally put into a category based on the level of damage sustained.
David Searby, serving as the Public Information Officer for the Massac County Emergency Management Agency, said each inspection is documented scrupulously; it's necessary to move the recovery process along without missing any details.
"The damage assessment process is two-fold," he said. "One, it's for us to kinda get a handle on the extent of the damage: What the damage is and what we have to do as far as debris management goes. Debris management is a big deal… We hope to finalize our debris management plan tomorrow and get that implemented. The second is actually the federal declaration process.
Searby said he and the crew take this part of the process very seriously because they are required to show the federal government exactly what type of damage occurred for potential funding. He said the more timely and accurate, the better.
Searby said the crews should be wrapping the initial assessment process Tuesday evening. He would also like to ask a very generous public to stop donating goods. Searby is asking anyone who would like to make a donation to give money to the Red Cross and other disaster relief agencies, but at this time stop donating things like clothes and other supplies because they have more then enough now.
According to David Searby, here are Wednesday's updated numbers and breakdowns on level of damage for the Brookport/Massac County area. The combined numbers for both county and city.
-48 habitable without repairs
-65 habitable with few repairs
-27 uninhabitable/needs extensive repairs
-67 total loss/not feasible to repair
Anyone in need of clothing or other supplies can reach out to the Brookport Church of Christ who will start handing out donations Wednesday morning.
