CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A local incident of attempted food stamp fraud caused a stir on Facebook.

It's against the law to buy, sell or trade food stamps.

It happens more often than you may make think, especially on Craigslist where the seller's identity is usually better protected.

But one local individual didn't hide the fact he was trying to sell his food stamps.

He posted it from a personal account on several open Facebook pages.

The individual didn't post to just one, but two Facebook pages used to connect buyer and seller.

The 'SEMO Yard Sale' and 'Sell It SEMO Third Times a Charm' pages allow users to post merchandise for sale.

This person attempted to sell $100 in food stamps for $50 cash.

Several people sent in screenshots of the Facebook posts.

Users quickly notified the people in charge of each page and the posts were removed.

Each page has a set of rules that sellers are supposed to follow to prevent these types of problems.

"I have a list of just a few rules that we like to keep in place at the top of the page pinned up there so people can see it and hopefully read over it," says Jamey Courtney, site manager for 'Sell It SEMO Third Times a Charm.' "It says attention please read this before you post so we try to make sure that everybody follows the rules but we know there's going to be some people that break them. When they break them we delete and ban them. That's all we can do."

Unlawful possession or use of food stamp benefits in the amount of $100 or more is a felony.

Attempts to reach the Facebook user responsible for the posts were unsuccessful.
