UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A Union County judge read Karen Nichols sentence last week, but you wouldn't find the mother of the baby inside the courtroom.
She said it was too hard to face the woman that kidnapped her only son. She said her only focus is being a responsible, protective parent for her son.
Bentley, a now five-month-old baby has no idea what happened the day he was taken from his mom. But for his parents, it's one day they will never forget.
"After it all happened and stuff all I could think about is all I want is my child, just let me have my baby," Lindsey McHughs said. "Take anything else, just let me have my kid."
After lying about being part of an organization that helps young mothers, Karen Nichols was able to get Bentley's mom, Lindsey McHughs, in her car; promising to take her shopping for items for the baby with a $250 gift card. That's when Lindsey said things started to seem strange.
"Here it comes in the afternoon," she said, "I figured by now I would be going home and instead I'm in Cobden. Why am I still out?"
That's when authorities say Nichols threatened the mother with a knife, tied her up and took the baby.
"She told me that I had to wait there for an hour and if I didn't, she would kill him," McHughs said. "As soon as she was out of sight, I took a big risk and took off running to find help."
Bentley was brought back here to her house where authorities later that day arrested Nichols and Bentley was returned to his family unharmed.
"Big relief to have him back," McHughs said. "Wouldn't want any other way to have him here with me."
Karen Nichols husband claims he didn't know anything about the incident until Nichols was arrested.
Online court documents show Nichols will receive 129 days credit on her 10 year sentence for time already served.
The family hopes their story will help warn other parents about trusting others.
According to Bentley's mom, Bentley is perfectly healthy.
