CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Taking a few extra steps to honor his fellow veterans.
That's the idea behind Ryan Mckennedy's 24-mile ruck march from Murphysboro to the Marion VFW.
Carrying 40 pounds of gear, his first step began at 7 a.m. Monday along Route 13.
Mckennedy said the march is not only to bring awareness to the holiday, but to show his appreciation to the thousands who have served.
"For me, this is about doing this for all the other people that no longer can or wish that they could," he said. "They are out there for us and I'm out here carrying the weight that they can't. So for one day, that's what I am going to do."
Mckennedy is raising money for the student veterans of southern Illinois.
