Redhawks suspend Stone, Johnson for first two games

(Cape Girardeau, Mo.) - The Southeast Missouri State men's basketball team has suspended forwards Tyler Stone and Nino Johnson for the first two games of the regular season due to a violation of team rules.

"I am disappointed to announce that Tyler and Nino will be suspended for the first two games," said Southeast head coach Dickey Nutt. "No one is bigger than this program. We have rules and consequences in place and our players are held accountable."

Stone and Johnson make up half of the returning players on the Redhawks roster. Stone, a senior named Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year, averaged 24.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in two exhibition contests a week ago. He led the Redhawks with 15.5 points per game in 33 games and 29 starts in 2012-13.

Johnson, also a preseason All-OVC pick, averaged six points and 2.5 rebounds in exhibition play this year. He ranked 22nd in the nation with a Southeast single-season record 84 blocks in 2012-13. Johnson was the Redhawks top rebounder (8.8 rpg), shot-blocker and third-leading scorer (11.1 ppg) last season, as well.

The Redhawks open the season Friday at defending Atlantic-10 Conference champs Saint Louis before returning home to host Central Baptist on Monday.

Stone and Johnson will return when Southeast plays at IUPUI on Nov. 16.
