HARRISBURG, ILL (KFVS) - In April 2012, Joseph Thatcher, 62, of Wilmington Illinois died while turkey hunting in the Saline County portion of the Shawnee National Forest.

Following his death, family and friends took up a collection and made a donation to the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

The donation was to purchase items that could be used for future search and rescue events.  Those items were recently purchased and include portable radios, landing zone kits, tracking devices, and a cell phone extender.

"We appreciate the family for thinking of the Sheriff's Office, after their tragedy and for hopefully assisting others in the future," said Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown in a news release. "Added to the donation from the Thatcher family, was another donation, from a family in Galatia.  The Galatia family in discussing and presenting the sizeable donation to the sheriff's office, the family stated that they felt blessed and what to assist the Sheriff's Office and also requested to remain anonymous."

All of the items were purchased from the donations, with no cost to the County.
