EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - An inmate in a southwestern Illinois jail is accused of stabbing a sheriff's deputy in the head with a pencil.
Prosecutors have charged 28-year-old Justin Creasey of St. Louis with two counts of felony aggravated battery.
Authorities say a deputy was making a routine check of jail cells Wednesday when he saw paper covering the window of Creasey's cell. The sheriff's department says Creasy did not comply with the deputy's demand to remove the obstruction.
When deputies entered the cell to check on Creasey's well-being, he allegedly threw liquid at them and stabbed the victim, who was treated by the jail's medical staff.
The sheriff's statement did not say for what Creasey was being jailed.
It's not immediately clear whether Creasey has an attorney.
