WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A Chicago man with a long criminal record will serve a 19-year prison sentence for an armed robbery that netted him more 700 cartons of cigarettes worth some $40,000.
A DuPage County judge sentenced 42-year-old Charles Watkins on Friday for the 2012 robbery at an Elmhurst store.
The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/16TwoWb) reports Watkins has been to prison six times before. The paper cited prosecutor Steve Knight as calling the defendant "a seven-time loser."
Prosecutors say a gun-wielding Watkins and an accomplice entered the store wearing uniforms and telling a clerk they were cigarette inspectors. After the clerk led them to a storage room, they allegedly handcuffed him and fled. They were arrested after a brief chase.
Watkins entered a guilty plea. The case of his alleged accomplice is still pending.
