JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

Sending your kids out after dark in scary disguise among dozens of others, a scenario otherwise known as Halloween night.

It's the one night of the year where families like the Kielhofners of Oran and Pobst clan in Jackson take on that atmosphere.

They took on our challenge to test out a GPS app that can help them track each other down.

"I liked it immediately," said Bridgett Kielhofner, a mother of two.

One, called Life 360, allows you to track others in your group through your phone.

"There's a map and you can see all the people in your circle," said Bryson Kielhofner after his parents had him download the app. "I liked it. I can message my friends too."

"You can actually see their history and have them check in, "said Brandon Kielhofner, of using the app to track his kids. He feels it will help keep them safe. "I liked how accurate it was."

It works by allowing family members to see each other's locations at any time. You can plan and map routes, only tracking people you add to your circle. There's a feature to set meeting places and also send alerts and messages.

"The world can be a scary place for a teenage girl," said Darla Pobst of Jackson. She's a mother of two. "It not only sends me a message but lets me know where she is and if she's in trouble. You could alert the police right away."

"It makes me feel safer," said Pobst's son, Mason.

"It's a little weird knowing they can track you," said Mallory, Pobst's daughter. Mallory is 15. "But it's fun too. It's fun connecting with your friends and seeing where they are. It is something that I know could help keep me safe."

Both families say not only will they use the app on Halloween, but plan to keep using it in the future.

"We will keep using it," said Bridgett. "It was a lot of fun and better than we expected."

The families feel the tracking apps are better suited for kids that are at least nine or ten. You can turn the tracking off and you only add people you want in your circle. You can also designate different 'circles'.

Here's a list of some other tracking apps you could use for Halloween:

  • Find my Friends: This app is free for iPhones. Use it to track your kids, friends or map with their permission. Use it to see exactly where your children are in real time
  • SecuraFone: This app sometimes has a fee. You can also use it to track in real time
  • GPS Phone Tracker: Free app for iPhone and Android
  • Life360: Free but has some extra features for a free
  • Gone Out — Later Folks: Kids can record and send information to parents
