Northbound I-57 re-opens after deadly crash

Northbound lanes of Interstate 57 have reopened following a deadly Monday morning crash in Jefferson County.

According to Illinois State Police Trooper Joey Watson., the crash involved two semi trucks and happened at 3:08 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 near the Dix exit at mile marker 103.

Raymond M. Burt, 44, of Kentwood, Louisiana was killed in the crash.

T.J. Cork Dilbert, 33, and Jenely B. Dilbert, 32, of Jacksonville, Florida were taken to a Mt. Vernon hospital with minor injuries.

A crash reconstruction expert is on scene working to determine what caused the crash. According to ISP, Dilbert slowed to allow a merging vehicle to enter the right lane of northbound I-57, but Burt did not slow and rear-ended Dilbert's truck.

Burt was thrown from the semi.

The cab of his vehicle had major damage. Dilbert's trailer was torn open with part of the load landing in the road.

Both northbound lanes near the site of the wreck were closed for several hours as crews work to clean up the scene.
