A southern Illinois man has passed away leaving behind a legacy of a career.

Charles 'Chico' Vaughn, 73, died from lung cancer Friday, October 25.

Many remember Vaughn as a man who has made many records in basketball that still hold today. As for family and friends he is known for so much more. A man who was loved by so many from family and the community, he helped pave the way for a family filled with educators.

According to his niece Zena Madison, he was a man who was very loved and helped show his children and grandchildren how to look at the positive in life, make good choices and pursue a positive future.

Vaughn is the highest scorer in Illinois high school boy's basketball, scoring 3,358 points in his career and graduating from Egyptian High School. Vaughn also attended Southern Illinois University for five years and was selected 26th overall in the 4th round of the 1962 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks. He also played in the ABA with the Pittsburgh Pipers. His career stats in the NBA and ABA racked up 5,822 points (11.9 ppg), 1,224 rebounds (2.5 rpg), and 1,024 assists (2.1 apg).
