PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police say a neighbor was on the phone with one of the five people found shot to death at a Phoenix townhouse in October.

The victims are Bruce Moore, 66; Michael Moore, 42; Renee Moore, 36; and Shannon Moore, 17. The shooter, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified as 56-year-old Michael Dante Guzzo.

The family's two dogs, a cocker spaniel and a springer spaniel, were also shot and killed.

Police said a neighbor was on the phone with Renee Moore at the time of the shooting, heard shots and asked, "what's going on?" before the line went dead.

Phoenix P.D. Sgt. Tommy Thompson said officers responded to a call about shots fired at the complex near 17th Avenue and Hazelwood about 9 a.m.

After shooting the victims, Guzzo walked across the courtyard and shot through the front door and window of another townhouse in the same complex, Thompson said. Guzzo left that scene on foot, apparently returning to his apartment. He reportedly sat down on a couch in his home and shot himself in the head.

Thompson told reporters that officers entered the first townhouse and found the bodies of four people. Two were on the patio, both shot in the head. One person found in the kitchen with a gunshot wound in the head. Another victim was found at the top of the stairs. Police said she was shot in the chest at close range. Two dead dogs were also found with gunshot wounds.

In the second townhouse next to theirs, Thompson said officers found the gunman's body.

A pump shotgun, believed to be the murder weapon, was found next to him, Thompson said. Police said Guzzo died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Benny Brown heard the large blasts.

"I heard the shooting but I didn't know what was what until I got the call that said 'stay indoors,'" Brown said.

Fearing there could be a shooter on the loose, police evacuated several apartments.

"They believe they had him confined to two different apartments, they just didn't know which one he was actually in," Thompson said.

SWAT officers opened the back patio to one of those apartments and found two people dead and inside, two more.

According to witnesses, Guzzo was apparently irritated over barking dogs. Neighbors said they believe that's what sparked the situation but police are still investigating.

Friends and relatives of the Moore family are holding fundraisers and taking donations to help with funeral arrangements.

Donations can be made at any Wells-Fargo Bank under the Michael Moore Memorial Fund under the account No. 5317747876.
