14-year-old accused of stealing car crashes into tree

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A 14-year-old is accused of stealing a vehicle before crashing it in Murphysboro.

Police say they got a call about a stolen vehicle taken from the 1300 block of Walnut Street shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

An off duty Murphysboro firefighter saw the vehicle near 14th and Maple Street. A short time later, the vehicle was spotted near Route 128 and Industrial Park Road.

According to Murphysboro police, the vehicle fled from officers at a high rate of speed.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle crashed into tree near Industrial Park Road and Maes Road. The 14-year-old was taken to St. Joseph Hospital for medical treatment.

He was released to his parents and police say charges of motor vehicle theft, fleeing to elude and theft over $500 are pending in Juvenile Court.
