CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Some downtown Cape Girardeau businesses hope an ordinance change means more sales for them.

Monday night, the city council changed a law so that businesses can have outdoor seating.

The law applies to restaurants on Broadway, Water , Pacific and parts of Main and Spanish Streets.

Some say the change could help increase food traffic and the charm of Old Town Cape.

"Because of the current economic situation here I think anything that would help businesses out, if that's the intent, then I'd be all for it," said Ed Peters, of Cape Girardeau.

City manager, Scott Meyer says that he expects to see more applicants for the sidewalk cafes at the beginning of the year

That's when business licenses renewal applications are sent out.
