Mo. adds new one-drug execution protocol

Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) -

The Missouri Department of Corrections said Tuesday that it has adopted a new one drug execution protocol.

The DOC will be using pentobarbital, which will be administered intravenously. This drug replaces propofol, which the department had intended to use in future executions.

According to the DOC, the change became necessary due to concerns about the use of propofol in executions.

The DOC has also added a compounding pharmacy to its execution team that will be responsible for providing pentobarbital for executions carried out under the new protocol.

The next execution in Missouri is scheduled for Nov. 20.
