An East Prairie man is accused of assaulting a woman inside someone else's home.

Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore says someone called 911 last Wednesday to report a man chasing a woman inside his home on County Road 510 in Dorena and assaulting her.

The caller told police a woman ran into his home and was chased by a much larger man who was biting and punching her.

The man feared for the woman's life and tried unsuccessfully to stop the assault. He then left the home and called for help.

When deputies arrived, they say they found 56-year-old Steven Earl Carter in a back bedroom on his knees with a woman pinned underneath him on the bed.

Investigators say the woman had two black eyes, several bite marks, and cuts across her face and body. She was taken from the scene for treatment.

Carter faces charges of second degree domestic assault and felonious restraint.

More charges are possible in the case.

Carter's bond was set at $50,000.
