Deadly Franklin County crash being investigated

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - An investigation is currently underway into a crash that killed a West Frankfort man on Monday.

According to the Benton Police Department, 76-year-old Cecil H. Bennett was driving north on Grand Street when he failed to stop at an intersection and crossed over Route 14.

Bennett's truck then crossed a deep ditch, hit a parked car and continued until it came to rest in a ditch northeast of the Fred's Store parking lot.

Bennett was pronounced dead at the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room just before 7 p.m.

His passenger and wife, 71-year-old Helen Bennett, was taken to the Franklin Hospital as well and then was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Helen Bennett's condition is not known at this time.

Neither Cecil Bennett nor Helen Bennett were wearing a seatbelt.

A cause of death for Cecil Bennett will be determined after final radiology and toxicology reports become available.

The Benton Police Department, Franklin County Coroner, and Franklin County Sheriff's Department are all investigating.
