POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Wednesday will be a day one Poplar Bluff family will never forget. Their hero returned from Afghanistan and made it a very special reunion.
"It's been tough, but you know you make it through," said Stephanie Moore, Garrett Hendrix's fiance. "You do what you have to do. I'm just ready to see him."
Stephanie Moore said she got the surprise of a lifetime when her soon to be husband returned home. But that was just the beginning of surprises Garrett Hendrix had planned.
"My mom thinks it is just another day at the house but little does she know I'm on my way to surprise her," Hendrix said. "We just found out my grandmother is there too. She has no idea either so we are going to get a double whammy."
"It was pretty hard to keep it quiet," said Lyndsey Hendrix, Garrett's sister. "I took her shopping this afternoon to keep her distracted. I've been trying not to smile. I've been covering my mouth."
"I've been waiting a year for and I'm glad its here," said Paula Hendrix, Garrett's mother. "I don't have to worry anymore."
After nine months away from family and friends, Hendrix said nothing is better than being home.
"We would go out and look for bombs," he said. "We would make sure that no out there is getting hurt. I was in Western Afghanistan."
