JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) National Response Team is joining the investigation into a fire that destroyed a paper and recycling business in Jackson.

The fire happened on Oct. 3 on State Highway Y. The ATF was called in by the Missouri Fire Marshal’s Office.

Missouri Plastics is a plastics and paper recycling company. The building is about 100,000 square feet and damage to the structure is considered a total loss. The damage for Missouri Plastics is estimated at $7 Million.

ATF’s National Response Team (NRT) members arrived on Sunday and began the scene investigation on Monday. Due to the complexity of the scene, a determination regarding the cause of the fire may take several days.

ATF responders are made up of 13 to 18 members, including special agents who have fire origin-and-cause expertise; forensic chemists, fire protection engineers, accelerant detection canines and additional support services.

Cape Girardeau County East District Fire Chief Dwayne Kirchhoff said the fire started on the east end of the Missouri Plastics building.
