CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A scary situation developed Sunday afternoon, after a swimmer decided to try to cross the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau.

According to Mark Hasheider with Cape Girardeau Fire Department, three people were along the riverbank on the north side of Cape Girardeau when one of them decided to swim across the river.

Search crews from both sides of the river searched for the swimmer who had lost contact with the other two in his party.

Cape Girardeau Fire Department crews searched with two boats as Alexander County, Illinois crews searched the Illinois side of the river.

The swimmer did swim across the river, but was found safe, according to Hasheider. No one was injured.

Officials say this was extremely dangerous because of currents, debris, and water temperatures.
