Carbondale police investigate 2 robberies

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Two robberies are being investigated that happened in the area of College and Poplar Streets in Carbondale.

Police say the incidents happened within moments of each other on Saturday night.

Police say the first happened along 600 West College Street around 9:15 Saturday night.

A black male approached the victim demanding property.

He is described as a 5'8", 180 lbs. with a goatee and wearing a gray sweatshirt.

Twenty minutes later on 500 South Beverage St, the same situation, only the subject approached a group of four people.

The victims described the second suspect as a black male wearing a hooded zip up and green and white hat.

Students say it's an area commonly used by students.

They see a lot of walking traffic and police patrolling the area on the weekends.

What's most surprising is that they say "the buddy system" should of prevented a crime like this.

"I am a little bit surprised because there is a police presence in the city and everything, so it is a little bit surprising to me," says Scott Ellison.

"There are so many people I don't see how they would be able to get away with something like that," says Jake Reinhardt.

There are no reports of weapons involved but police are warning folks to be aware of their surroundings and to avoid walking at night and to never let your guard down.

Police are still investigating. No other information is available at this time.
