FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

An Indiana man who police say escaped from an Illinois prison camp 13 years ago has pleaded guilty.

According to court papers, Donald Bruce pleaded guilty Friday in Franklin County to a federal charge in connection to escaping in 2000 from a prison camp in Marion, Illinois.

In July, an Indiana officer had ran a background check on a man he thought seemed suspicious near a restaurant.

According to police, Bruce openly admitted to being an escapee. He also said he was preparing to turn himself in.

"Apparently, he had intended on giving up the next day. He just wanted to meet with some family before he turned himself in," said Oakland City Police Captain Tim Gaines.

Gaines says Bruce will have to finish out the rest of his prior sentence.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 18.
