JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

Johnny and Sheri Farmer have been through a lot together.

'We've been together 33 years,” Johnny said. “We've had a lot of ups and downs, a lot of them, but we've stuck through it all."

Sheri won her fight against cancer in May, but she says she couldn’t have done it without her husband. According to a study, married cancer patients are 20 percent more likely to win their battle against cancer.

"If it wasn't for my husband, I wouldn't have gotten through any of it,” Sheri Farmer said.

"Every minute I was home I was by her side,” Johnny Farmer said.

Shanna Gilberto with the American Cancer Society says spouses play a huge role in every fight.

“It provides them with hope and relief throughout the process,” Gilberto said. “They can lean on them for physical support as well as emotional support."

Gilberto says there are resources for both patients and spouses.

“Cancer treatment isn’t just about the cancer and treating it,” Gilberto said. “It’s also about the patient and the caregiver providing that emotional support that they need because when they’re faced with cancer they don’t know where to go. The American Cancer Society has several resources for patients and also for caregivers. The website is www.cancer.org and the helpline for patients is 1-800-227-2345 and they can call anytime, day or night, and somebody will provide them with the answers they need.”

Sheri and Johnny Farmer say they got through the battle hand-in-hand.

"I stood beside her because it's not only my job, but I love her very much,” Johnny Farmer said.
